viticulture

The research objective of the Viticulture Department is to demonstrate how high-quality grapes can be produced. These grapes serve primarily as a basic material for quality-oriented wine making.

However, grapes are also used for grape juice production or are consumed as fresh grapes. Special attention is given to the sustained management systems such as integrated and organic-biological production and their profitability.

Topics for the experimental activity

  • Vineyard management and pruning systems;
  • Vineyard measures such as canopy management, plant protection and grape thinning;
  • Soil treatment, fertilization and planting vegetation;
  • Irrigation and application technology;
  • Evaluation of wine grape and fresh table grape varieties and their clones, as well as new breedings for their disease resistance and cultivation suitability under Austrian climate conditions;
  • Conservation of biodiversity through collection, preservation, evaluation and use of international, old and rare vine varieties (approximately 400 grape varieties and their clones).
